Alex Barker

Transfiguration is an emotional yet practical experience for grieving relatives and friends to say farewell to their loved ones in a dignified space.

To remember, and be remembered are natural human needs, so the crematorium responds to both personal and public requirements for mourning and remembrance in a building that ritualises one’s life, regardless of faith or culture.

It holds two separate functions: one spiritual, regarding the ceremonial aspect of death, and the other practical, regarding how death is dealt with after the final farewell.

Transitional spaces, geometric forms, materiality, and natural light form the symbolic representations of ideas of remembrance and journey, which are evoked in the design of the crematorium. My project provides those experiencing the space with a dignified and respectful acknowledgement of one’s passing.
