AS OF DATA COLLECTED FROM THE WORLD BANK ORGANISATION IN 2020, THE URBAN POPULATION OF PEOPLE LIVING IN THE SLUMS IN COLOMBIA ACCOUNTS FOR 27.8% OF THE COUNTRY’S URBAN POPULATION.
COLOMBIA’S SECOND LARGEST CITY MEDELLIN CONTAINS OVERCROWDED URBAN DISTRICTS FROM WHICH IS COMPRISED OF POOR LOW SOCIAL CLASS INDIVIDUALS THAT COMMONLY SHARE HOUSEHOLDS THAT LACK DEVELOPED LIVING CONDITIONS. IN THESE SLUMS, INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS ARE PERCHED ON HILLSIDES OF THE OUTER EDGES OF THE CITY AND CONSEQUENTLY LACK DEVELOPED URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE, TRANSPORTATION, ACCESS TO WATER, SUFFICIENT LIVING STANDARDS AND DURABLE HOUSING CONSTRUCTION.

THIS PROJECT RECOGNIZES THE NEED TO STIMULATE THE SLUM REGIONS OF MEDELLIN TO CREATE LIFE CHANGING OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISPLACED AND LESS PRIVILEGED INDIVIDUALS. WITH INCREASING POPULATION GROWTH TO THE CITY FROM ONGOING RURAL DISPLACEMENTS RESULT OF INTERNAL CONFLICT AND URBAN EXPANSION, SLUM OCCUPANTS ARE CHALLENGED TO UPKEEP STABLE MEANS OF INCOME, HEALTH AND WELLBEING.

A PROPOSAL TO REGENERATE POSITIVE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL GROWTH WITHIN THE NEIGHBOURHOODS OF SAN JAVIER, MEDELLIN WILL PROVIDE THE DISADVANTAGED AREAS WITH A PLATFORM TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES ALONGSIDE THE CITY DWELLERS. A FUNDAMENTAL FRAMEWORK OF URBAN AGRICULTURE, COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS WILL BE INSTILLED THROUGHOUT THE SITE TO IMPROVE FOOD SECURITY, JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND BETTER QUALITY OF LIVING. THIS PROPOSAL WILL BE GRANTED WITH THE CONJOINED ASSISTANCE FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND CARTEL ORGANISATIONS IN REPAIRING A DISJOINTED CITY AND TROUBLED PAST. THIS PROPOSAL WILL ALLOW FOR SETTLERS TO REGENERATE PROSPECTIVE COMMUNITIES TO AID IN DECREASING POVERTY RATES. THIS PROJECT WILL THEN ACT AS A CATALYST FOR FUTURE RE-DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL COLOMBIAN STREET SLUMS.
